Storyline
Although there is a potentially gripping survival story here, it is the look and feel of this short film is what makes it work. The narrative sees a young woman left alone in a desolate camp, who then has to hunt and survive the wild for years before being able to return home. The film provides a silent snapshot of this, before then filling it in with more detail on the cards at the end. Limiting the delivery in this way does tend to reduce the 'easy' emotional impact of the survival, but it also adds to the feeling of isolation and starkness of the situation. This effect is driven mostly by the whiteness and space of the animation, the windy soundtrack, and the lack of dialogue. On this front it works well. In terms of narrative I wasn't held so much by the content as I was by the feeling the delivery produced. I also found it a bit off-putting that motherhood was so front-and-centre, particularly in those final moments. Reading about the film, the telling of a female survival story was highlighted as a notable point about this film, so to see that then use this jarred; the desire to get home to family is not a problem, nor is its use as a true device of character motivation, but it is so leaned on here that it did stand out as being something that would not have been done if the character was a father. Good animated film though, albeit mostly driven by the craft in design and delivery
