Storyline
Just over ten years ago Gaza's 3,000 fishermen could sail up to 12 miles out to sea. Those who still fish today work within a small area; they cannot reach the species they traditionally catch and fish supplies within the boundary are running out. The film was shot during sardine season; sardines are found just beyond the three mile frontier. Fishermen now catch the small fish they used to leave for the larger fish to feed on - detrimental for marine life. Crossing or approaching the boundary can involve arrest, seizure of boats and earnings, injury or even death. The documentary was filmed with the help of Raed, a local fisherman. He took the crew out on his speedboat and introduces us to a man checking his nets, some fishermen on a large trawler, an older fisherman who tells us what fishing in Gaza once was, a group of men struggling to find fish in their nets and another group who have made it back to shore with just one crate of small fish. Sayadeen is an eery and beautiful documentation of an often ignored aspect of the Gaza blockade - a must see for anyone wanting to understand more about what day-to-day life is like for Gazans. Official Selection, Boston Palestine Film Festival, 2013 Official Selection, East End Film Festival, London, 2013 Listed for the One World Media Awards, 2014.
