CryptoPunk #7804, a computer-generated avatar of a teal-colored, pipe-smoking alien wearing a hat and sunglasses, was sold Wednesday evening for 4,200 ethereum, which equates to approximately $7.5 million, setting a record for the highest amount paid for a punk as the digital collectibles marketplace continues its meteoric rise.

According to CryptoSlam, an NFT data aggregation site, CryptoPunk #7804 was initially purchased three years ago, in January of 2018, for 12 ethereum.

It was then put up for sale again on Feb. 27, 2021, for 4,200 ETH, which at that time was roughly $6 million.
