This was the first game in the series created by Sega and Sonic Team after the series' original creators, Compile, went bankrupt. There was a special, free version of this game called Puyo Puyo Fever: Carnival Edition, which only featured Endless modes and online play. From every month from March 2006 to December 2006, you could play against special characters (mostly from other Sega games). If you manage to beat one, then you could enter a contest and win some Puyo-themed merchandise. This was the very last game released by Sega for their Dreamcast system. This was the second series created by Sonic Team to keep spawning sequels today. For 13 whole years (before Puyo Puyo Tetris was localized), this was the last game in the series to be localized.
