Description
This is another of my favorite video games of all time and in the run and gun genre. For one think I really love that this game deals in time travel which is cool I always love that subgenre in sci-fi and it makes sense as this game was in the 80's and the Time Travel subgenre was popular again with the film "The Terminator", "Back to the Future" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures" were all out. Let alone I played this game when I was about seven, it was the first run and gun game I played and still one of my favorites. Though the game isn't perfect it has its misfires, the plotline is a bit strange nor make much sense even by DC comic standards as there are inconsistencies with it, from the fact if this alien overlord is so powerful why didn't he just kill the time soldiers right at that point in time. Also, the game can be a little redundant as a few of the bosses and battles with them kind of blend together just dressed differently. Let alone the game can get cheaply difficult as enemies tend to pile up and bunch up around you fast. But despite the games misfires it's really the hits that count which is what really matters in good video games. Let alone the plot of the game really isn't important, by its nature it's just a clothesline for the action which is what we're all really in it for when playing run and guns. I like the control, it's the same control scheme as in "Ikari Warriors" which is the fixed direction movement. Which is cool and very useful for these kinds of run and gun games, as you need to fire a certain direction for a great deal of time to help clear the area out. Let alone the fact your enemies come in all directions and you need to be able to turn a certain direction to nail the bad guy before he nails you. I really love how the game has a feel of going though an adventure, not to say any of the other run and gun games are adventures themselves but those feel more contained. In this game you get to traverse to different time periods. Each of the time periods are different and interesting there is always something different about them and different things in them. Like the Age of Rome, The World Wars, War World, though two of my favorites are the Prehistoric Era and Future World which are both cool. One thing that makes the game unique is the ability to time travel where there is place portal where you can go though certain levels, give the game an almost nonlinear element. However, this is useful only for the specific destination objective your assigned to, on the top of the screen you are told which time period to go which is where your lost solder buddy is. Once you get enough of the buddies, there are new time periods that spring up. Which makes the adventure a little longer which I didn't mind as most run and guns are sometimes short but sweet experiences. There is a solid variety of enemies that is both crazy and colorful. Like ninjas that throw shuriken at you, roman soldiers that fire arrows or throw swords, robots that shoot out lasers, cavemen that throw stone axes, triceratops that shoot out horns. Even the bosses are just as crazy and colorful, like a three headed hydra that shoots out fireballs, a spiked dinosaur forgot it's name that shoots out spikes but also forms itself into a spiked ball to roll on you, and my favorite a t rex that shoots fire balls at you, the list goes on you just have to see them to believe them. Music is decent and good despite the tracks not on my favorites list, though I really like the Age or Rome track that was an enjoyable listen. It's really the sound effects that stand out the most and to me are music to my ears like your regular laser, the explosions, or whenever you die you give out this loud cry, that cry has been ingrained into my subconscious ever since because when you play this game you will hear that a lot. The power ups are sold as they consist of sub weapons each of them has strengths and weaknesses like the spread shot which does help double fire power and increase the width but not the range. Another the straight laser canon which has both increased fire power and range but can't hit the guys on top. Then there are missiles which can hit guys on top and are powerful but can easily be deflected by the enemy's weapons. But my favorite power up is one which makes your soldier uber strong, where your firepower is increased as it is speeded up to automatic where you can simply hold down the button and let the discharge speed do the work. You can also take hits, however this doesn't last long, and you shouldn't take too many hits otherwise the timer runs out quicker, so don't waste your ability. Also, sometimes if you get the same sub weapon twice you can increase the fire power on that sub weapon which makes it all the more cool. If you're into vintage run and gun games, Time Soldiers is worth your time. Rating: 3 and a half stars
